Amy Marren has finished 7th in the Women’s 100m Backstroke S9 Final of the World Para Swimming Allianz Championships at the London Aquatics Centre. Starting in lane 8 Amy was always at a disadvantage but she powered through to shave nearly a second off her time in the heats to finish the final in a time of 1:15:73.

Amy, who has previously represented Great Britain at the Paralympic Games, had not raced at a major championships since the Rio Paralympic Games and was representing Ireland for the first time at the world championships today. Although she was forced out through injury from her first event of the week yesterday, she was able to compete with the best in the world and was delighted with her performance.

‘I only started using my arms in training a couple of weeks ago so that in itself has been quite tough but I realised that this is what comes with elite sport and I have been working really closely with the staff who have been there on hand whenever I need them, I’m only based in the UK so I know they are only a phonecall away, we’re managing it really well and like I said it comes with the sport.’

‘I love the atmosphere, I’ve actually got my dad and my sister and my best friend here tonight so having my name read out and saying I represent Ireland now and just having them cheer for me and having them literally in my eyeline before my race was just fantastic. Great pool, great venue, great crowd, all of it amazing.’

Amy is due back in the pool again tomorrow in the heats of the 100m Fly, Barry McClements will also be in competition in the 100m fly and Nicole Turner will compete for the first time at the 2019 World championships when she lines up for the 200m Individual medley.
