The Irish Open Swimming Championships continued in Dublin today with Brendan Hyland, Danielle Hill, Daniel Wiffen and Calum Bain joining the record-breaking train.

Hyland put in a superb performance to claim the National Title in the 200m Butterfly for the eighth year running, breaking both the Irish Senior and Irish Open Championship Records in the process. The National Centre Dublin swimmers time of 1:57.21 knocked .17 off his previous record of 1:57.38 set at the same event in 2018.

Danielle Hill, on return from a lengthy injury, smashed her way through the 50m Backstroke Final in a new Irish Senior Record of 28.64. The Larne swimmer had held the previous Irish best of 28.72 set in 2017.

Lisburn’s Daniel Wiffen had the NAC crowd on their feet as he stormed home to a new Irish Junior Record in the 800m Freestyle. The 17-year-old was under consideration times for both European and World Junior Championships with his time of 8:16.79, that time smashing Conor Turner’s previous Irish Junior Record (8:19.15) by over 2 seconds.

Calum Bain of Cookstown set a new Championship Record of 22.58 in the splash and dash 50m Freestyle Final. Bain, adding to his 50m Butterfly Title, bettered Curtis Coulter’s 2016 time of 22.73. National Centre Dublin’s Robbie Powell swam a best time of 23.01 for silver while Bangor’s David Thompson pipped Coulter to bronze by one hundredth of a second clocking 23.22

Ellen Walshe cruised to her fourth 200m Butterfly National Title in 2:14.42, a lifetime best for the Templeogue swimmer. British Olympian Hannah Miley won Commemorative Gold in the event in 2:13.39.
