Swim Ireland – Ryan Through to Another Semi-Final in China and Irish Record Train Keeps Rolling

5 anos ago 0

Following his heroics yesterday Shane Ryan returned to the pool at the FINA World Short Course Swimming Championships this morning and cruised into the semi-final of the 100m Freestyle in a new Irish Record time of 46.97. The 50m Backstroke bronze medallist shattered Jordan Sloan’s 2017 record of 47.84 by almost a second, also making Ryan the first Irish man under 47 seconds in the event.

Ryan hadn’t competed in the 100m Freestyle (SC) since 2013 and so was in an unseeded heat which he comfortably won to progress to the semi-final of the event in 9^th place overall.

The 100m Freestyle semi-final takes place today at 11.15am.

Ahead of the 100m Freestyle swim Ryan was part of the Ireland men’s 4x50m Medley Team that set another Irish Record. Ryan, with Conor Ferguson, Darragh Greene and Brendan Hyland were impressive in the second heat touching in 1:35.05, knocking .58 off the record set at the 2017 European Championships. The time left the team in 10^th place overall and confident going into the 4x100m version of the event tomorrow where they will look to break a longstanding Irish Record of 3:45.66 set in 2001 by a team that included Olympians Adrian O’Connor and Gary O’Toole.

Darragh Greene also competed individually in the 50m Breaststroke this morning, after a 200m Breaststroke Irish Record on Thursday, the 23-year-old set another personal best time at the event touching in 27.43.

Even more Irish Records were set at the Swim England Winter Championships in Sheffield last night. 18-year-old Jack McMillan, who set records in the 200m Individual Medley (senior) and 200m and 400m Freestyle (junior) at last week’s Irish Short Course Championships broke both his junior and Jordan Sloan’s (3:43.21) Irish senior record in the 400m Freestyle clocking 3:42.42 for a silver medal. McMillan then joined his Bangor team mates Sloan, David Thompson and Curtis Coulter for the 4x50m Medley Relay where the quartet broke their own Irish senior club relay record of 1:40.28 in 1:38.75 for second place.
