ITU is pleased to announce that the 2020 Winter Triathlon World Championships will take place for the second consecutive year in the Italian town of Asiago, in the heart of the Alps, from the 7th until the 9th of February.
With an average altitude of 1500 meters, the snow arrives abundantly every winter and the organisers have chosen the perfect location for the race to be held and also for those athletes who arrive early, to train along the running, biking and cross?country skill trails, all the while enjoying the view, smells and sounds of the magnificent forests that surround them.
“I am really excited to return to Asiago for the 2020 Winter Triathlon World Championships. It is great to see the commitment of the Organisers and the city and return to a place that has so clearly proved to be fantastic for all participants last year”, said ITU President and IOC Member, Marisol Casado. “Being in the heart of the Alps guarantees excellent snow conditions for the participants, a magnificent scenario, and a really convenient location close to airports and hotels, which brings a perfect combination both for the athletes and their friends and families to come and enjoy this amazing spectacle live”, she explained.
“With the continuous support of the Italian Federation, always contributing to hosting high?quality winter events and the local organising committee, I’m absolutely convinced that the winter version of our sport will continue to grow in terms of participation and popularity and Asiago will be the perfect set up to showcase this wonderful sport to the whole world”, Ms. Casado added.
The race, held also in 2019 at the Centro Fondo Campolongo, in Altopiano di Asiago, was one of the most successful editions of the Winter Triathlon Worlds, with both ITU and the organisers receiving really positive feedback from athletes from all over the world. The Venetian Mountains will once more greet those athletes, friends and families who will come to Italy, to Asiago and compete for the medals, the titles and for the pure thrill of racing with the world’s best athletes across the Elite, Para and Age?Group categories.
Winter triathlon is one of the newest additions to the ITU calendar, and it was in Italy, back in 1997, where the first-ever World Championship was held. Athletes raced in Malles Venosta. Victory went to Italy in both the women’s and men’s event and since then, Italy has been one of the leading nations in the sport, with the winter months regularly seeing regional, national, European and World Championships.
The 2020 edition in Asiago will see not just the Elite but also the U23, Junior, Para, Mixed Relay and Age Group athletes all racing for medals and titles.
The course will take athletes through a magical and dramatic landscape. In October 2019 a massive storm raged through the region, ripping up trees and exposing areas that had remained hidden for centuries. People coming to the region will also have a chance to discover some historical sites associated with tragic events of the World War I, as well as simply exploring the spectacular scenery available along nearly 100 km of paths and trails.
